Satellite Clinics

Abstract

Many offices have a satellite office that is open only one or two days a week. If the two offices are never open at the same time, Capable Software Pty Ltd allows a single license of Capable 21C to be shared between the two offices. If there is ever a time when both offices are open at the same time, a second license is required. This article describes how to setup PCs to optimize the use of Capable 21C when a satellite clinic is involved.

Underlying challenge

There are three fundamental options when establishing a satellite clinic:

  • Each office has its own PC’s and a separate database that is not shared with the other office.
  • A single PC (eg a laptop computer) will be moved between the offices as needed.
  • Each office has its own PC’s but both offices wish to share the same database. /li>

    Resolution

    If each office has its own PC’s and a separate database, the resolution is relatively simple:

  • Install Capable 21C on each of the PC’s.
  • Follow the standard instructions for configuring Capable 21C in a network (if either or both of the offices have a network). Note that Capable 21C license restriction of 5 PC’s still applies across the two offices. Refer to KB-Installing Capable 21C in a network for more information.

    • If a single laptop will be moved between the offices:

  • Install Capable 21C on each of the PC’s and the laptop.
  • Follow the standard instructions for configuring Capable 21C in a network. Ensure that the laptop computer is nominated as the ‘main’ computer that houses the Capable 21C database. Refer to KB-Installing Capable 21C in a network for more information.

    • If there will be several PC’s in each office, and both offices wish to share a common database without having to move a laptop between the offices, refer to the detailed instructions.

    Detailed Information

    To allow PC’s at two offices to access the same database without transporting that database between the two offices, it will be necessary to have some kind of network technology between the offices. This is typically implemented using Broadband technology. There are two ways of getting computers at different sites to share information over a Broadband link. These are called IP and Terminal Services. IP is only effective on extremely high-speed links, which are not cost effective for most small businesses, so Capable Software Pty Ltd recommends the use of Terminal Services for this kind of setup.

    Terminal Services involves establishing a Terminal Server at one of the two locations that runs a copy of Capable 21C and shares it with client workstations running at both sites. The Terminal Server is a standalone PC that cannot be used by staff (but does not count towards licensing limits for Capable 21C).

    Terminal Services and Terminal Servers should only be configured by a computer technician with an MCSE qualification or better. Contact Capable Software Pty Ltd directly for further information regarding this option.
